TAGLINE:
"Every great railway begins with a modest loan and a regrettable level crossing."

SHORT DESCRIPTION:
NewCaptains is a transport management sandbox for Windows PCs. Lay rail, road,
canal and airport networks, buy trains, buses, ships and aircraft, and haul coal,
goods, food and passengers between towns and industries as the decades change. It
keeps the classic build-haul-earn loop and adds curved track with speed limits,
free bridges and tunnels, level crossings that bite, and a day and night cycle.
In development; no release date yet.

FACTS AS OF 3 OCTOBER 2026:
- Engine: Unreal Engine 5.8 client on a C++20 simulation kernel (no floating
point in the simulation, per-tick state hash).
- Scale: realistic scale, 16 m cells. The default map is 1,024 x 1,024 cells,
  about 16 km across.
- Simulation benchmark: a headless benchmark with 1,000 timetabled trains plus
500 road vehicles, 150 ships, 100 aircraft and 5 rivals averages 6.25 ms per
tick against a 33.3 ms budget. This is a benchmark of the simulation, not the
  game window.
- In-game frame rate: about 82 fps at 1080p on one desktop GPU (development
  build, automated test run).
- Content today: 6 cargo types (coal, wood, goods, passengers, food, water) and
17 vehicle models (locomotives, wagons, road vehicles, ships, aircraft).
- Automated tests: 2,732 passing.

WHAT WORKS TODAY (current development build):
- Curved track with a live speed limit (first version): drag a curve and a graph
shows its capital cost and maximum safe speed before you commit. One arc per
drag, radii 16-256 m. Tighter curves are slower and cost more.
- Level crossings that bite: trains never stop for a crossing. An unprotected or
broken one gets a vehicle destroyed, the owner fined and the news posted. Broken
locomotives limp to a depot, and tow trucks and puller locomotives rescue them.
- Free bridges and tunnels over rivers and other track: no permission and no fee,
and clearance rules refuse bad spans.
- Industry holds and switching: serve a plant from your own stub or siding
instead of just placing a station next to the factory.
- Day and night with seasons: lit locomotives, aircraft navigation lights, sun
and moon, and 9-15 hours of daylight depending on the season. A day can last 30
minutes, 1, 2 or 4 hours, or follow your local clock.
- A guided first route (nine steps), with a "first train arrives" celebration at
  each new station.

PLANNED (drawn on paper; none of this is built yet):
- Click-and-stretch track laying with natural curves anywhere, beyond today's
  one-arc-per-drag first version.
- Hills that matter: heavy trains that stall on steep grades, helper engines, and
  splitting a load.
- Freight as individual cars and customers: customer-owned spurs, cars ordered by
  count, and classification yards.
- Dispatch that changes with the decades, from train orders towards centralised
  control.

ABOUT THE MEDIA IN THIS ARCHIVE:
- Logos/ The NewCaptains logo (transparent PNG).
- Screenshots/ Nine 1920x1080 screenshots from automated test runs of the
current development build. The art is work in progress.
- Concept_Art/ Six concept images: three scenes and interface mock-ups, and
three logo concepts. Concept art is concept art: it is not
in-engine, and the interfaces, vehicles and buildings it shows
are not the game's. Some labels inside the images are garbled.
